Editor's Note: Story Assignment Withdrawn

The cold case breakthrough described in this story prompt occurred in Lake County, Florida โ€” not Lake County, Ohio.

The Mentor Headlands Herald cannot publish this article as a local Lake County, Ohio story. The victims identified through forensic genetic genealogy โ€” Leslie Shaw, found Dec. 7, 1991, near County Road 433 in Sorrento, Florida, and Roy Arthur Torvik, found May 15, 1988, in a canal in Minneola, Florida โ€” were discovered at Florida locations and investigated by the Lake County Sheriff's Office in Florida.

No evidence confirms that the Lake County, Ohio Sheriff's Office has identified cold case victim remains from 1988 or 1991 using forensic genetic genealogy.

This note is published in the interest of transparency. Readers interested in how forensic genetic genealogy is advancing cold case investigations can find the original reporting at Forensic Magazine.
