Mentor Lagoons will keep its kayak rental office and concession stand open on September weekends because popular demand has stayed strong, giving residents more time to get onto the water before fall.
The city’s September boating schedule runs through Sept. 27. Saturday rentals and concession service are available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the final launch at 5 p.m.
Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina is at 8365 Harbor Drive in Mentor.
Rentals and prices
Walk-up rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of 10 or more can make reservations by calling 216-399-2347.
Hourly prices are $10 for a single kayak, $15 for a double kayak, $15 for a canoe, $10 for a stand-up paddleboard and $20 for a pedal boat.
The extended season keeps a city-provided route onto the water available for residents who want to paddle or pedal as summer winds down.
Safety on the water
Renters age 16 or younger must be accompanied by an adult. The rental operation provides life jackets, and renters must wear them at all times.
Late-season paddlers should also pay close attention to cold water, rough water and severe weather. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources advises all boaters to wear life jackets rather than simply carry them, especially in those conditions.
Access after rentals end
The separate public boat ramp remains open, weather permitting, from April 1 through Nov. 15. Daily hours run from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. That season is separate from the rental schedule, which ends Sept. 27.
The preserve’s trails are open from dawn to dusk, and the preserve closes at dusk. Swimming is prohibited, parking is limited to designated areas, and dogs must be leashed.
Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve covers 230 acres and includes 1.5 miles of Lake Erie shoreline.
